Naumachiae

The Roman Colosseum was home to many entertaining events during the height of the Roman Empire. One thing the Colosseum was thought to have hosted around 80 AD was the use of the area for what they called Naumachiae, or sea battles. This is where they would literally fill the bottom of the area with water and specialized horses and bulls would battle under this water. They also were thought to have had war ships in this area, which isn't confirmed because they still to this day are unsure as to how they would get these warships inside and have enough room to move around.

Last summer I went to Rome and actually took the tour of the colosseum where you could see where this all took place. They told us that in addition to the sea battles using horses and bulls, they also did reenactments for entertainment purposes of what was known as the Battle of the Corcyreans and the  Corinthians, which were both greek.
