The Crusades began in the late 11th century.
The Crusades were a series of battles and conquests to conquer the holy land. The Crusades where started by the Catholic church to regain land that were lost to the Muslim empire. The Byzantine empire was being invaded by Muslim Turks, and they turned to Europe for help. Pope Urban II gave a compelling speech to his people and riled them up. His famous three word phrase "God wills It".
There where many other reasons to go on the crusades:
- God would forgive their sins
-Seek of adventure
-Anyone could join and become part of a brotherhood
-Getting out of trouble in court
-Economic gain
etc.
The only real successful Crusade was the first one which involved the taking back of Jerusalem which eventually got taken back.
Even though the crusades where mostly unsuccessful they allowed people to share each others culture because of the mass amount of people moving around.
