Feudalism

Europe went into a chaotic time after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. There was no form of political system until Feudalism was created. With the king having full power, he gave the Vassals their own land that they had complete control of, called a manor. The Vassals were powerful and faithful to the king. In return they had to provide the king with rent money, military service, and serve on the royal council when he asked. One way to earn money for the king was to rent out some of their land to Knights. They were also very wealthy. The rest of the land was dispersed among the serfs. Most of the population were serfs, but they had no rights and had to give free labor and food to the knights. They weren't allowed to leave the manor or marry without permission from the Lord.

Although Feudalism was very self-sufficient, it wasn't healthy because there was no leisure time. Everyone gave up their rights and freedom for protection.
