Science and the Church
The Scientific Revolution that occurred between the 1500s to the 1700s was one of the most important revolutions that occurred in history. It entirely changed the way people looked at the world and the universe. Before scientific revolutionaries and thinkers began to research and discover the world as we know it to be today, people had very inaccurate thoughts about the world. The church was the main source of information really regarding any topic, including science and astronomy. It was taught that God placed Earth at the center of the universe, with the sun revolving around it, and then placed humans and all the nature that exists today here as well. Because of this belief, people were thought to look at the world in a way of nature and miracles, instead of seeing the theories and laws that exist.
Galileo:
Science and the church had very different beliefs, and the scientific revolutionaries were thought as questioning the church’s authority and knowledge on the truth of the world. Consequently, this made it very challenging for scientists to publish their discoveries, and many were taken to court or punished for their research.
However, scientific revolutionaries like Newton, Galileo, Kepler, and more had to discover these findings on their own and went against the church’s beliefs. Because of these scientists, we now know that the Sun is the center of the universe and that all the planets orbit around it. They discovered that planets move in elliptical orbits and that the law of gravity exists. The scientific revolution was extremely important in developing our knowledge of the world and the universe today.
